Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It contains an unusual gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate and cysteine, which resists cleavage by many peptidases. The reduced form, GSH, carries a thiol group on cysteine and is the dominant intracellular form in most cells. Its structure allows it to participate in redox reactions and to serve as a sulfur donor. The oxidized form, GSSG, consists of two GSH molecules joined by a disulfide bond.
In cells, glutathione helps maintain the reducing environment of the cytosol and supports enzymes that counteract reactive oxygen species. It acts as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases, which reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, and for glutathione S-transferases, which conjugate electrophiles. The ratio of GSH to GSSG is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress, although the ratio can vary by compartment and cell type. Glutathione also stores cysteine, an amino acid that can be limiting for protein synthesis and antioxidant defense.
Samples for glutathione analysis require careful handling because the compound oxidizes readily and can be consumed by enzymes after collection. Blood is often treated with acid or thiol-blocking agents soon after draw, and plasma should be separated quickly from red blood cells. Tissues are usually snap-frozen or extracted immediately. Aqueous solutions of glutathione are less stable than dry powder and degrade faster at neutral or alkaline pH, in light, or with dissolved oxygen. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles also reduce reliability.
Quality control for glutathione materials checks identity, assay, purity, water content, and disulfide content. Commercial products vary from research-grade powder to dietary supplements, and labels may not distinguish reduced from oxidized forms. In the United States, oral glutathione is commonly sold as a dietary supplement rather than an approved drug, while injectable forms fall under different rules and may require a prescription. Regulatory status differs by country. Analytical certificates, when available, help verify what a material contains, but independent testing remains important for interpretation.

Glutathione functions in redox balance, detoxification, and sulfur amino acid storage. It participates in reactions that help maintain ascorbate and protein thiol status. The molecule serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. Glutathione also contributes to the metabolism of xenobiotics and to the transport of cysteine between tissues. How interorgan transport and tissue-specific regulation shape whole-body pools remains an active area of study.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its cysteine residue carries a thiol group, which allows the molecule to participate in reduction and oxidation reactions. The compound exists in most living cells, where the reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is usually more abundant than the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG. Intracellular concentrations are commonly in the millimolar range, while extracellular concentrations are much lower. This uneven distribution supports its role as a major cellular redox buffer.
Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent enzymatic steps. The first step combines glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase. The second step adds glycine, producing the complete tripeptide, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase. Glutathione itself can inhibit the first enzyme, providing negative feedback when levels are high. Because cysteine is often limiting, its availability influences how quickly the pathway proceeds. These reactions occur in the cytosol, and the resulting glutathione can be distributed to other compartments.
For solid glutathione, storage conditions affect shelf life. The reduced form is typically kept cool, dry, and protected from air and light. Moisture can promote oxidation, while elevated temperatures accelerate degradation. Suppliers often specify storage at or below freezing, sometimes under inert gas. Solutions are less stable than powders and may require preparation shortly before use. Buffers and chelating agents can slow oxidation, but they do not eliminate it. Published stability data vary with matrix, pH, and container.
Quality control for glutathione focuses on identity, purity, and oxidation state. Certificates of analysis may report assay value, water content, and the presence of GSSG or other impurities. Chromatographic purity is often expressed as a percentage of peak area. Reference standards help laboratories compare results across instruments and batches. Because glutathione is a small, polar molecule, separation from cysteine, gamma-glutamylcysteine, and related thiols can be challenging. Verification often combines more than one analytical technique.
This tendency to reduce surface energy in the system can be counteracted by adding species which will adsorb to the surface of the nanoparticles and lowers the activity of the particle surface thus preventing particle agglomeration according to the DLVO theory and preventing growth by occupying attachment sites for metal atoms. Chemical species that adsorb to the surface of nanoparticles are called ligands. Some of these surface stabilizing species are: NaBH4 in large amounts, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and/or dodecanethiol. Once the particles have been formed in solution they must be separated and collected. There are several general methods to remove nanoparticles from solution, including evaporating the solvent phase or the addition of chemicals to the solution that lower the solubility of the nanoparticles in the solution. Both methods force the precipitation of the nanoparticles.

Proton-coupled amino acid transporter 1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SLC36A1 gene. This gene encodes a member of the eukaryote-specific amino acid/auxin permease (AAAP) 1 transporter family. The encoded protein functions as a proton-dependent, small amino acid transporter. This gene is clustered with related family members on chromosome 5q33.1.
After the discovery of the hydrogen bonded A:T and C:G pairs, Watson and Crick soon had their anti-parallel, double helical model of DNA, with the hydrogen bonds at the core of the helix providing a way to "unzip" the two complementary strands for easy replication: the last key requirement for a likely model of the genetic molecule. As important as Crick's contributions to the discovery of the double helical DNA model were, he stated that without the chance to collaborate with Watson, he would not have found the structure by himself. Crick did tentatively attempt to perform some experiments on nucleotide base pairing, but he was more of a theoretical biologist than an experimental biologist. There was another near-discovery of the base pairing rules in early 1952. Crick had started to think about interactions between the bases. He asked John Griffith to try to calculate attractive interactions between the DNA bases from chemical principles and quantum mechanics. Griffith's best guess was that A:T and G:C were attractive pairs. At that time, Crick was not aware of Chargaff's rules and he made little of Griffith's calculations, although it did start him thinking about complementary replication. Identification of the correct base-pairing rules (A-T, G-C) was achieved by Watson "playing" with cardboard cut-out models of the nucleotide bases, much in the manner that Linus Pauling had discovered the protein alpha helix a few years earlier.

87Rb, 187Re, 176Lu, 232Th, and 238U have half-lives long enough that their decay is limited over geological time scales; 40K and 235U have shorter half-lives and are hence severely depleted, but are still long-lived enough to remain present in significant amount on Earth. The longest-lived isotope not proven to be primordial is 146Sm, which has a half-life of 9.20×107 years, followed by 244Pu (8.13×107 years) and 92Nb (3.47×107 years). 244Pu was reported to exist in nature as a primordial nuclide in 1971, but this detection could not be confirmed by further studies in 2012 and 2022. Taking into account that all these nuclides must exist for at least 4.58×109 years, 146Sm must survive 50 half-lives (and hence be reduced by 250 ≈ 1×1015), 244Pu must survive 57 (and be reduced by a factor of 257 ≈ 1×1017), and 92Nb must survive 130 (and be reduced by 2130 ≈ 1×1039). Mathematically, considering the likely initial abundances of these nuclides, primordial 146Sm and 244Pu should persist somewhere within the Earth today, even if they are not identifiable in the relatively minor portion of the Earth's crust available to human assays, while 92Nb and all shorter-lived nuclides should not. Nuclides such as 92Nb that were present in the primordial solar nebula but have long since decayed away completely are termed extinct radionuclides if they have no other means of being regenerated. As for 244Pu, calculations suggest that as of 2022, sensitivity limits were about one order of magnitude away from detecting it as a primordial nuclide.
=== America, Iran, and Under Milk Wood, 1950–1953 === American poet John Brinnin invited Thomas to New York, where in February 1950 they embarked on a lucrative three-month tour of arts centres and campuses. The tour, which began in front of an audience of a thousand at the Kaufmann Auditorium of the Poetry Centre in New York, took in about 40 venues. During the tour, Thomas was invited to many parties and functions and on several occasions became drunk—going out of his way to shock people—and was a difficult guest. Thomas drank before some of his readings, though it is argued he may have pretended to be more affected by it than he actually was. The writer Elizabeth Hardwick recalled how intoxicating a performer he was and how the tension would build before a performance: "Would he arrive only to break down on the stage? Would some dismaying scene take place at the faculty party? Would he be offensive, violent, obscene?" Caitlin said in her memoir, "Nobody ever needed encouragement less, and he was drowned in it." On returning to Britain, Thomas began work on two further poems, "In the white giant's thigh", which he read on the Third Programme in September 1950, and the incomplete "In country heaven". In October, Thomas sent a draft of the first 39 pages of 'The Town That Was Mad' to the BBC. The task of seeing this work through to production as Under Milk Wood was assigned to the BBC's Douglas Cleverdon, who had been responsible for casting Thomas in 'Paradise Lost'.

=== Civil rights === Bhutto Zardari has repeatedly defended the rights of minorities in Pakistan. On 4 December 2012, in a statement responding to reports about the demolition of a Hindu temple in Karachi and a desecration of an Ahmadiyya graveyard in Lahore he said, "Our forefathers did not sacrifice their lives for an intolerant, extremist, sectarian, and authoritarian Pakistan. I appeal to all of you to rise up and defend Jinnah's Pakistan. My party and I will stand by you, shoulder to shoulder." During a cake cutting ceremony for Christmas in Karachi, on 25 December 2018, Bhutto Zardari said that he PPP is the custodian of social justice, parity, religious, and interfaith harmony in the country and its advocacy for the prevalence of peace and tranquility across the world is heavily established. At the memorial for the 7th death anniversary of former Federal Minister of Interfaith Harmony, Shahbaz Bhatti on 3 March 2018, Bhutto Zardari said, "May I take this opportunity to say that we share the concerns over the misuse of blasphemy laws. This is the concern of not only the Christian community but of all of us. It is my concern too. These laws have been used as a tool by extremists to settle personal scores. They have been used to grab the properties of Christians and other non-Muslims. The blasphemy laws carry the mandatory death penalty. We must prevent their misuse. We will." On 29 September 2019, he visited the Hindus in Ghotki and the Sacho Satram Dham temple which was desecrated in the 2019 Ghotki riots and condemned the attack.
The carboniferous rocks of the Yorkshire coalfield further east have produced a rolling landscape with hills, escarpments and broad valleys in the outer fringes of the Pennines. In this landscape there is widespread evidence of both current and former industrial activity. There are numerous derelict or converted mine buildings and recently landscaped former spoil heaps. The scenery is a mixture of built up areas, industrial land with some dereliction, and farmed open country. Ribbon developments along transport routes including canal, road and rail are prominent features of the area although some remnants of the pre industrial landscape and semi-natural vegetation still survive. However, many areas are affected by urban fringe pressures creating fragmented and downgraded landscapes and ever present are urban influences from major cities, smaller industrial towns and former mining villages. In the Magnesian Limestone belt to the east of the Leeds and Wakefield areas is an elevated ridge with smoothly rolling scenery, dissected by dry valleys. Here, there is a large number of country houses and estates with parkland, estate woodlands, plantations and game coverts. The rivers Aire and Calder drain the area, flowing from west to east.

In 2019, Dream Market was the most popular market by far, with over 120,000 current trade listings, followed at one time by Wall Street Market with under 10,000 listings. Dream Market was shut down in 2019, and Wall Street Market was seized by law enforcement in May 2019 as part of an Internal Law Enforcement Operation Dark Huntor. That same operation also shut down the dark markets DeepSea, Berlusconi, White House, and Dark Market. The May 2019 seizure of news and links site DeepDotWeb for conspiring with the markets created a temporary disruption around market navigation. In 2021, authorities took down the dark web marketplace DarkMarket, along with arresting the Australian man who was believed to be the operator of the website. The 20 servers that hosted the website were seized. In August 2021, AlphaBay was relaunched after the return of one of the original security administrators DeSnake. In June 2025, Europol took down the Archetyp Market with an estimated 3200 registered vendors and 600,000 customers worldwide.

GSH is the reduced form with a free thiol group, while GSSG is the oxidized disulfide-linked dimer. Most assays distinguish the two because their balance reflects redox conditions. The names are not interchangeable.
It is synthesized in the body from amino acids, so it is not classified as an essential dietary nutrient for most people. Dietary and supplemental forms are studied for their effects on tissue levels and health markers. Evidence varies by population and outcome.
The phrase highlights its high intracellular concentration and its role in several antioxidant and detoxification reactions. It is not the only antioxidant, and the term can oversimplify its functions. Scientific descriptions usually specify the pathway or enzyme involved.
Common approaches include enzymatic recycling assays, HPLC, and LC-MS/MS. Acid extraction and rapid processing limit oxidation before analysis.
